On Devex’s list of the world’s 50 most powerful persons, President Mahama came in at number 5

In acknowledgement of his leadership in promoting the “Accra Reset”, Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama was placed fifth on a list of the 50 most influential individuals influencing global development and change-making by reputable international publication DEVEX.

DEVEX claims that the list focuses on people “who are transforming development as we know it”, emphasising that prominent political personalities are no longer the only ones with power in the modern development sphere.

According to the article, “the most powerful are often the behind-the-scenes players, whether in government, philanthropy, artificial intelligence, multilateral finance, or health, reinventing the concept of helping people in what many see as a post-aid era.”

DEVEX further stated that although international leaders like US President Donald Trump have altered foreign aid programmes, the true forces behind change are those who are rethinking development models in the face of dwindling traditional aid.

President Mahama’s inclusion in the top five was explained by DEVEX as “a leading voice pushing for a new deal for African development”, with a focus on trade reform, debt reduction, and climate finance.

According to the article, President Mahama has maintained that Africa needs to “renegotiate its place in the global economic order rather than simply adapt to declining aid”.

A new vision for African health sovereignty based on national ownership and more equitable international cooperation was introduced in August of last year [2023], when President Mahama hosted African leaders, policymakers, and experts in global health in Accra.

DEVEX added that during the September UN General Assembly, the idea was broadened beyond health and transformed into a more comprehensive development agenda with global significance.

According to the article, “They’ve dubbed it the ‘Accra Reset’, an effort to declare an end to the era of development-as-usual and to push for the creation of new governance, business, and financing models in response to the US aid cuts.”

It further stated that Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president of Nigeria, is an advisor to the project, and President Mahama has become “the leading, hands-on advocate of this new vision”.
