The former president disclosed that the project intends to establish a contemporary administrative and economic centre elsewhere in the nation in order to alleviate the strain on Accra’s housing, transportation, and infrastructure.

President Mahama stated at a speech over the weekend that Accra’s infrastructure and population expansion have reached their limits, necessitating the construction of a new metropolitan core to house new residential areas, businesses, and government institutions. He claims that the projected metropolis will function as a “secondary capital”, carefully designed to meet Ghana’s long-term growth requirements.

According to him, feasibility studies for the project, which would be situated on the Accra Plains and extend into portions of the Eastern and Volta Regions, are already in progress. With contemporary road networks, rail links, industrial zones, residential estates, and technologically advanced administrative buildings, the city will be a planned, sustainable, and digital metropolis.

According to President Mahama, the new city will not only ease traffic in Accra but also encourage regional harmony and boost economic expansion outside of the capital. “We need to look ahead because Accra is strangled.” “This new metropolis will be smart, inclusive, and green—designed to serve as a model for future generations,” he said.

Additionally, the president stated that the project would take roughly 20 years to finish and that work would likely take place in stages. According to reports, the first phase will entail moving a few ministries, government organisations, and departments from central Accra to the new location. The city will prioritise the use of renewable energy, effective public transportation, and cutting-edge waste management infrastructure, he continued.

According to experts, the concept is similar to effective city development patterns found in other African nations, like Egypt’s New Administrative Capital and Nigeria’s Abuja. Urban planners have long cautioned that if aggressive measures are not implemented, Accra’s unrestrained growth could result in serious environmental and socioeconomic problems.

The news has generated a lot of public interest, with many people applauding the concept and others raising concerns regarding funding and implementation. Strong political will, open land acquisition procedures, and sustainable funding sources, according to some observers, will be critical to the project’s success.

In closing, President Mahama reassured Ghanaians that his administration is dedicated to seeing the project through to completion. He declared, “We are constructing a metropolis that symbolises Ghana’s future—one that embodies growth, technology, and unity.”

If finished, the new metropolis would rank among Ghana’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, paving the way for a new phase of the nation’s urban growth.
