Officials revealed during a GTV broadcast that prominent New Patriotic Party members are being investigated for suspected financial crimes.

According to reports, investigations link Afenyo-Markin to a contentious case concerning the disappearance of over 1,300 shipping containers containing electrical supplies imported for ECG procedures. Independent auditors first raised concerns about procurement procedures and oversight shortcomings after the containers allegedly disappeared at Tema Port under suspicious circumstances.

Concerning financial irregularities were also discovered during the investigation, including ECG’s use of more than 80 different bank accounts and unexplained losses totalling more than five billion cedis. The OSP claims that these results point to potential state funding misappropriation and systemic negligence.

According to sources, Afenyo-Markin has received an invitation to voluntarily appear for questioning at the Economic and Organised Crime Office. If he refuses, National Security might be asked to force him to comply, which would make the case more politically sensitive.

The public’s reaction was swift, with political analysts and members of civil society demanding process transparency. Some see the investigation as a part of a larger plan to issue a strong warning against abuse of power, while others think the minority leader should cooperate to clear his name.
