The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched a comprehensive investigation into suspected match-fixing and unlawful betting activities in response to the startling disclosure.

TFF President İbrahim Hacıosmanoğlu affirmed that a thorough investigation carried out internally in cooperation with state authorities revealed widespread betting among referees, including 15 assistant referees and seven top referees.

42 referees were revealed to have wagered on over 1,000 football games, and in one extreme instance, a referee allegedly placed 18,227 bets.

Our disciplinary committee will begin taking the required steps today.

“All identified referees will be referred to the disciplinary board for discipline under federation laws,” Hacıosmanoğlu stated.

The prosecutor’s office stated that it will further its investigation, which has been going on since April, and has taken the TFF’s disclosure as an official denunciation.

Authorities are looking into possible infractions of federation codes, sports integrity legislation, and betting rules that forbid sports officials from participating in gambling.

Dursun Özbek, the president of Galatasaray, called the disclosure “an crucial turning point for Turkish football” and urged the TFF to make the names of the accused referees, the games they officiated, and the specifics of their wagers publicly available.

He promised.

We will see this procedure through to the finish.

Sadettin Saran, the president of Fenerbahçe, said the results confirmed his team’s long-standing allegations of favouritism and corruption among the referees. “Our righteousness is coming out,” he said, promising to keep a close eye on the inquiry.

Other teams are requesting that relegation be suspended this season until the situation is resolved, while Beşiktaş has demanded complete revelation of referees’ identities.

One of the most significant integrity crises in Turkish football’s recent history, the five-year investigation has rekindled worries about corruption and the legitimacy of refereeing in the top leagues in the nation.
