According to reports, the Ghana Police Service has detained Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“Details surrounding the reasons for his arrest remain unclear,” according to a story published by citinewsroom.com.
Abronye’s detention follows his formal application for political asylum in eight nations, including the United States, France, Italy, Canada, Spain, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana’s neighbor.
The vocal politician has given four justifications for requesting political asylum and security protection.
Baffoe’s allegations originate from what he described as “systemic abuse of state security powers by the current government of Ghana, threats to his life, and consistent, escalating political persecution.”
Threats of illegal arrest and incarceration, intimidation, targeted harassment, and an increasing pattern of persecution after his arrest in February 2025 are the four primary grounds for Abronye’s request.
“I became the first opposition politician to be invited, arrested, and held for more than 13 hours by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) in February 2025, just after the current NDC administration took power.
“I was arrested after publicly denouncing the government’s ruthless, unjust, and widespread termination of more than 150,000 Ghanaian employees without cause and demanding their prompt reinstatement. I was threatened, intimidated, and given a firm warning that I would suffer harsh retaliation in the future if I didn’t stop criticizing the government while I was in custody,” he said.
“There has been a troubling trend in recent months of opposition politicians being arrested and held without bail for longer than the 48 hours required by the constitution,” he continued. These have fostered an atmosphere of fear and intimidation in which the government’s political rivals are singled out on purpose. I firmly believe that my family and I are in immediate and serious danger in light of these facts and the direct threats to our lives and freedoms.
