Ghana had 571 operational FM stations as of the second quarter of 2026, according to the National Communications Authority’s latest authorised radio-stations data.

The NCA says 793 FM broadcasting stations had received frequency authorisations, demonstrating the scale and diversity of Ghana’s radio industry.
Commercial radio dominates
Commercial stations make up the largest classification in the NCA’s radio data. The sector also includes public, community, campus and public foreign stations.
These different categories serve different audiences. Commercial broadcasters generally operate for profit, while community radio focuses on specific communities and public or campus stations serve broader institutional or educational purposes.
Why radio remains important in Ghana
FM radio continues to provide news, music, sports, education, public discussion and community information to audiences across the country. Its accessibility remains one of the reasons radio continues to play an important role even as online platforms grow.
Digital listening is also changing how audiences discover stations. Online radio allows listeners to access broadcasters outside the traditional coverage area of an FM transmitter.
What the NCA figures mean for listeners
The number of operational stations gives listeners a broad choice of programming, languages, regions and formats. It also creates opportunities for digital radio platforms to organise and present stations in ways that make discovery easier.
For broadcasters, the figures underline the importance of competition, quality programming, regulatory compliance and investment in digital distribution.
The future of Ghana radio
Ghana’s radio sector is increasingly connected to mobile and online listening. As audiences use smartphones and connected devices, stations can reach listeners beyond their traditional FM footprint.
